Summary
- Borderlands games aren't on Xbox Game Pass or PS Plus, making buying the series potentially costly.
- Borderlands 3 was available as one of July 2024's monthly PlayStation Plus games, but the window to claim it has closed.
- The Borderlands games often go on steep discounts.
Although Borderlands is a defining franchise in the looter shooter genre, actually getting into the series across its four main games and multiple spin-offs can be a tough ask - which makes subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus an appealing alternative. While there hasn't been a new main entry in the series since Borderlands 3 in 2019, a sequel has been confirmed to be in development, and the series continues to receive spin-offs like fantasy-leaning Tiny Tina's Wonderlands and narrative-driven Tales from the Borderlands.
While the looter shooter genre that Borderlands arguably popularized has somewhat given way to live-service games like Destiny 2, The First Descendant, and Warframe, Borderlands is still a good choice for players looking for a more self-contained experience - especially one that can be enjoyed with friends. For anyone who wants to experience the entire series, though, buying every single game and each game's DLCs can be costly, even with games from the series going on sale fairly regularly.

Borderlands Isn't Currently On Game Pass
Borderlands Left Game Pass in 2020
Unfortunately, while the Borderlands games are available on most major platforms, including Xbox, they haven't been made available on Game Pass. The original Borderlands, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel were previously included in Game Pass, but three games left the service simultaneously at the end of March 2020, and haven't returned since. Likewise, spin-offs like Tales from the Borderlands and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands have previously had associations with Xbox services, but have never appeared on Game Pass itself.
As a result, it can safely be expected that Borderlands 3 will likely not appear on the service either - or, if it does, will only be available for a limited time. There is a possibility that the Borderlands game may appear on the service as part of a deal in the lead-up to the release of Borderlands 4, similar to the presence of the Persona games on Game Pass, but with the next Borderlands game still seemingly a long ways off, it's safer to assume that the series simply won't appear on Game Pass again.

Borderlands Is No Longer Available On PS Plus
PS Plus's Borderlands 3 Offer Is Already Over
Similarly, Borderlands hasn't had much presence on PlayStation Plus, either. While PS Plus subscribers could claim Borderlands 3 in July 2024, the period to claim the game has unfortunately ended, and it's unclear when or even if the series will appear on the service again. None of the Borderlands games, including spin-offs, are part of the service's standard catalog, and, like with Game Pass, it's relatively unlikely that they'll appear there in a permanent capacity.
So, unfortunately, anyone looking to play the Borderlands games in 2024 can't do so through any of the major console subscription services, or even some of the lesser known cloud gaming services like Nvidia's GeForce Now. Luckily, the games do go on sale fairly often, and tend to have drastic discounts when they do, but any current subscribers of Game Pass or PS Plus won't find any of the Borderlands games on either service.
Borderlands
Borderlands is a multimedia franchise that began with the first game's release in 2009. The series follows the exploits of various Vault Hunters, treasure hunters who travel across space trying to find the legendary treasure, all while racing against ruthless intergalactic capitalist corporations and various hostile extra-terrestrials, all while keeping their trademark humor intact.
