Five Blocks In Original City Five blocks comprised the original town of Seymour, as it was laid out in 1852 by Meedy White Shields and his wife, the former Eliza P. Ewing. They were the four blocks "cornering at Second street and Indianapolis avenue," still an important part of Seymour's downtown business section which has since expanded, plus the block south of Second street, between Ewing street and Broadway. The town lots sold rapidly and soon an addition was laid out to the original five blocks.

Many other additions followed, being laid out as the town continued to grow. Since that time, additional territory has been divided into lots on all sides of the city and within the last few years, new subdivisions have been platted and developed provide residences for the growing community. Annexation by the city has extended corporation lines to include total area probably far beyond the fondest dreams of Mr. and Mrs. Shields.
