(AP) A Vevay man who was confined to a wheelchair died in a fire at his home after firefighters attempting to rescue him were driven back by flames and heavy smoke, Officials siad. Arlie John Bear, 68, died of smoke inhalation, said Switzerland County Coroner Carol Sub-lett. Authorities said Bear was yelling and communicating with them during two attempts to reach him in the one-story frame home, but firefighters respond- ing to the 1 a.m. fire Wednesday were driven back by heat and were nearly overcome by smoke. The State Fire Marshal's office was investigating the cause of the fire.
